What Does It Mean To ‘Holiday’?

We’ve just spent the last 25 days out of the country, visiting the Mouse and taking a Caribbean cruise. I think this might be the perfect amount of time to vacate as I’m much more relaxed than I was at the end of our trip last year. Disclaimer: I’m sitting in the Delta Lounge, off my face on Long Island Iced Teas.

How is it that we as a society decide that working ourselves to the bone over a 47 week period (due to my time at SAIT, I get 5 weeks of vacation) is okay? Why is that the norm? Why do we put up with it? How do we fix that so that we’re balancing our working lives with time away from work?

An even better question might be how do we make sure those 47 weeks don’t occur in one lump batch and make ‘mini holidays’ a norm again? I think I mull these ideas over at the end of every single holiday I’ve taken for the past eight years which doesn’t invalidate them, just makes me wonder if I’ll figure the answer out sometime soon.

My wife actually gets more time off than I do but she’s employed at a school and only really gets her long break during the summer because I get more flexibility in my schedule. I’ve considered Fall and Spring breaks and how to integrate them into my work schedule but this can’t be done for Sly.

Which is a conundrum because, unfortunately, I love her and love traveling with her. Not having her with me really does change the texture of a trip somewhere. On the one hand I become more adventurous, striking out in random directions to explore and find things that I wouldn’t normally do with Sly by my side. On the other, I don’t have the most important person in my life with me to share those experiences. I attempt a sort of ‘hacky’ pseudo-experience where I send her pictures and texts all day, telling her what I’m up to, where I am and what I’m seeing.

Did this last year with a spring trip to Vegas and it worked out pretty well. Five days off work and a quick jaunt out to Nevada gave me the recharge I needed to get me back in the fight at work.

So I’ve already started thinking about my next trip and it will probably be something quick and cheap (aka Vegas) that will get me out of the city for a few days and allow me to relax a bit.

This trip was incredible and I’ll probably want to write-up a few lines about it and some of the neat things we saw and did while away but I’m sitting in the Delta Lounge at MSP relaxing before our next flight which will take us home and I’m in more of a mind to sit and try to keep this travel glow going as long as I can.

Well maybe just a taste:

Sunrise on the morning of my 45th birthday

I’ll have more later.

Cheers!

Imposter Syndrome, Anyone?

You know what’s wrong with first class? The realization that it probably isn’t going to happen again very often.

I’ve been very happy with this investment in our vacation this summer. First class flights, a much nicer stateroom on the cruise (with a real porthole) and a basic disregard for a budget. Sly and I deserve it.

Been a pretty stressful year for both of us. Sly’s dad dying was just the beginning. The new role I’ve taken on at Applied Research, additional responsibility for Sly at work. Just a few of the things that have vexxed us over the last year.

Our summer vacation last July was a pretty cool road trip down to Oregon. I really enjoyed that but it wasn’t Disney. Sly put up with it and almost enjoyed it but we really wanted this year to be a big one for travel. I don’t think we could have foreseen the trouble we’d encounter over the year but this will definitely help. Let’s get back to first class……

You get on the aircraft first, sit back and relax with a soothing beverage. We selected coffee and I ordered an orange juice as well. Two drinks?  Not an eyelash was batted.

Then we sit, enjoy our drinks while the rest of the plane boards. We make idle chatter, trying not to make eye contact with the others walking by us. I actually, for just a moment, feel very self conscious and out of place. I’m supposed to be one of those people walking by.

We get into the air and they come by with cloth place mats for our breakfast. I’ve selected the only option left (the other option was unavailable for us in the second row) a chorizo flatbread. Sly is now left with no option. I expressed some disappointment to the attendant who, upon hearing my wife doesn’t eat beef or pork, offered a snack box and all the fruit from the first class breakfast. I was struck dumb and offered my sincere thanks for the way they were serving us. And he kept bringing stuff like fruit for my wife. You could bet we wouldn’t be getting this sort of attention in economy.

Is it too early for a drink I ask the attendant? It’s 5 o’clock somewhere is the reply. I ordered a gin and tonic (my inflight drink of choice lately)and receive a double. We better just give him more now so we’re not running back and forth to the galley was probably the logic behind that decision. When the second one arrives during breakfast I realize I’ve overplayed my hand. I gesture to Sly, who’s been more conservative with her beverage selection, that assistance will be required. She gestures back: you’re cut off. I nod my acquiecence.

I’m looking around and I definitely don’t fit in. Sly mentions were the youngest people in this part of the plane. Which then makes me think about retirement and if I’m doing enough so that we can have a comfortable, if not luxurious, retirement.

See? This is what happens when I get free gin and tonics on a flight. I get all introspective and shit. Can I get another drink over here please?

As Sly and I begin thinking about what we’d like to do for vacation, I’m reminded that a little cynicism comes in handy when thinking about another trip to Disney world.

Last summer’s double treat of a week at Disney world followed by a week on a Disney cruise was in my top three for vacations I’ve taken in my life. We’re considering a repeat of that for next year and I’m quite excited about the prospect. Sly and I will be looking at cruises for next summer on Thursday when the release the schedules.

Back to the cynicism. The link I’ve included below gives an interesting insight into some of the problems being experienced by guests at the resorts. Things like increased wait times for attractions to increased prices on food in the parks. I thought it was interesting and might be a good read for anyone contemplating a trip to Florida.

Some Crappy Phone Pictures from Disneyland Hallowe’en 2015

“Fortune and Glory, kid; Fortune and Glory”

Found out over the weekend that Disney plans on opening an Indiana Jones themed restaurant and bar in Downtown Disney. OMG!

Indiana Jones is probably one of my favorite franchises and the thought of being able to have a meal and a drink in this type of themed facility excites me to no end. I’m hoping for a level of authenticity without so much… ‘polish’.

Disney has several areas that could be considered ‘authentic’. The first that comes to mind is the area of the Animal Kingdom that they call Africa. There’s a little village in there with some neat shops, a bar and a restaurant that simply makes me feel like I’m sitting in a bar, having an African beer in the middle of the Congo.  That’s the sort of thing I’m hoping for.

When Sly and I started vacationing at Disney, it was almost exclusively for her. Then slowly but surely there were more and more things that I am in and wanted to see.  Star Wars was huge. When Disney bought the Marvel Studios means that there will be something occurring in that vein in the future. And now this.

I can only hope they do it right. I have confidence in the Imagineers and their love of the material. And I can hardly wait till I get a chance to tip my Poet’s Hat back on my head and enjoy a shot of whiskey.  🙂

Summer Vacation 2015: Disney!

Sly and I have finally gotten off our asses and booked our vacation for the summer. We’ll be doing a week in The World and a week on a Disney cruise; specifically the Disney Fantasy.

We had a hard time determining the duration of our summer vacations or more specifically how long we were going to take.  After spending last X-MAS in Vegas, we were trying to find something to get us back to our Disney roots.

I’ve never been on a cruise before. Closest I’ve come is a couple of ferry rides between Italy, Greece and the Greek Islands. Not really the same when you consider we were sleeping on deck in some of the most uncomfortable chairs known to Man. In fact, both Sly and I have really never expressed much of an interest in taking a cruise. However, Disney gets tossed into the mix and suddenly it’s on the top of our to-do list.

I always have a hard time blowing $750 CDN on flights only to spend a week at our destination hence my insistence on spending a week at the Walt Disney World resort as well.  This will be so much fun! I’m really looking forward to it.

We haven’t been back to Disney since our Xmas trip of 2012.

Standing in front of Cinderella’s castle.

That really was an eye opener about how costly some of these trips can be.  It was enough to keep us from going back again during the high season for a couple of years but now we’re returning in middle of summer. Should be interesting with a combination of the heat and the crowds. Assuming you don’t hear about a Canadian suffering heat stroke and a loss of patience to all the little animals crawling around the parks losing his mind and making something explode, we’ll be having a grand time allowing Disney to take care of us.

Walt and Mickey will be happy to see us again; I’m sure of it. 🙂
